Troopers are still trying to piece together what happened in Sunday morning's fatal crash on North Meridian Road. But a lot of drivers say they're not surprised by what happened.
"It's Not safe. It's not safe. Like I said, people drive too fast. People dart out of the side road and try to get in front of you," says Mary Burner.
Troopers say around 3am Sunday, Delvin Cromartie was driving along North Meridian Road with Shakira Smith when Cromartie lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree, killing him and severely injuring Smith.
Many residents say because of speeding and sharp curves, accidents have become all too common here. It's one of the reasons why drivers like Mary Burner try to avoid the road at all costs.
"I run a computer business so I do a lot of on-sight services and I'll go miles out of my way if I have to," says Burner.
Other drivers like Nick Henn say they want to see improvements made to the road that will make is safer and less of a hazard for drivers.
"How many people have to die before you start chopping down trees? Like a ten or twenty foot embankment on the side of the road. How many lives would that save in the next ten, twenty years, " says Henn.
Troopers say when driving on any road, drivers should always take the proper safety precautions to keep them and other motorists safe.
"Obey the speed limit, avoid any distractions and always wear your safety belt," says Lt. Jeff Frost of the Florida Highway Patrol.
Smith is in critical condition at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
According to the Department of Highway Safety and Motor vehicles, there have been 24 crashes this year on North Meridian Road. And yesterday's crash has been the only fatality. Florida seems to show a high number of crashes state-wide. in 2010 alone, there was 235, 461 reported accidents. That's 338,112 drivers impacted... and an average of 645 crashes every day.
