Wiregrass Georgia Technical College in Valdosta is helping kids in the area by cleaning their teeth for free. It's called "Give Kids A Smile Day" sponsored by the American Dental Association.
The goal is to bring children in that do not have regular access to dental care. Students in the dental assisting program and dental hygiene program at Wiregrass Tech work on the children's teeth. The students take X-rays, perform cleanings and give oral health instructions. "Give Kids A Smile Day" is designed to provide care and raise awareness of the importance of accessing dental care for children.
"Its a great win-win situation, our students get practice and working with real world children and getting the experience there and the children get the care they need," said Director of Dental Programs Sandi Woodward.
Anna Bush is a parent and brought her children to the event.
"This program has really opened up to help the children of the area, you know with the economy the way it is now, everything is kind of tight and it's nice to have the option to have a free cleaning," said Bush.
Children between the ages of 3 and 9 are considered eligible for the event. The program aims to see 50 kids every year.
