Tallahassee, FL - Some Florida legislators are fighting for fair access to cancer treatment.

State leaders and patient advocacy groups joined cancer patients at the Capitol Wednesday to show support for the Cancer Treatment Fairness Act.

The proposed bill asks that insurance companies treat cancer treatments the exact same.

For example, 32-year-old Luke Webb says his oral chemotherapy treatment costs $7,000 per month. Whereas, if it were available for his form of Leukemia in traditional chemotherapy I-V form, it would be covered 100 percent by his insurance.

Webb says, "It was tough for me and my family. You have to make a choice. Do you pay for food, or do you pay for a car? You have to decide whether to pay to stay alive. It's devastating for families."

The bill sponsors say this would not be a mandate, rather a request for insurance companies to not discriminate when it comes to coverage.
