October 25, 2012 - According to the mainstream medical community. research says that it's in the public's best interest to get a flu shot. Some medical researchers say that less than 50 percent of the U.S. population receives a flu shot every year, numbers that show the growing distrust that vaccinations like flu shots can be ineffective. Dr. Tom Skinner with the Centers for Disease Control says vaccinations "are the single most important thing people can do to protect themselves" during the flu season. Doctors also promote washing hands frequently during cold and flu season as this can be one of the main causes of transmission for a host of infections, including different strains of cold an flu's.

Also, researchers in France estimate that almost 170 million years of healthy life were lost to cancer in 2008. They analyzed global cancer statistics, life expectancy numbers, and the disabling outcomes of cancer including mastectomy or infertility. Asia and Europe were the main contributors to the global burden of years of healthy life lost due to cancer, with men in eastern Europe facing the largest cancer burden worldwide and for women, the highest burden was found in sub-Saharan Africa. In most regions, Colorectal, lung, breast, and prostate cancers, accounting for 18 to 50 percent of the total cancer deaths.
