A new study suggests diabetes rates may be higher in countries that consume lots of high fructose corn syrup.
Researchers analyzed data on diabetes prevalence collected by the global burden of metabolic risk factors collaborating group. They found Body mass index, daily calories and total sugar intake were comparable across countries regardless of the level of high fructose corn syrup intake.
They found diabetes tp be about twenty percent higher in countries where use of the sweetener is high compared to those where it is not.
However, critics say the research doesn't prove the sweetener is any worse than other sugars.
