Health Alert 8-14-12

August 14, 2012 - People who use long term blood pressure medications may be at greater risk for developing lip cancer. The Kaiser Permanente study finds that certain drugs cannot only make a patient sensitive to sunlight but can increase the risk for cancer in the outer most layers of their lips and skin. However, researchers say that the benefits of the blood pressure drugs outweigh any risk.

Also, researchers at Columbia University may have found a way to help convert the fat we store in our bodies into energy. Humans have two types of fat tissue, white and brown. White tissue stores energy, while brown tissue burns energy. Columbia researchers are looking into specific enzymes that may help convert the white fat to brown possibly leading to treatments for obesity and diabetes.
