August 22, 2012 - A popular hair loss drug for men may cause suicidal thoughts. A new study found men who used Propecia and developed persistent sexual side effects experienced depressive symptoms and suicidal thoughts. Researchers at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences conducted the small sample study. Authors of the study are calling on doctors to discuss the possible side effects with patients. The new research study will appear in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
Also, it's back to school time and kids everywhere are carrying backpacks to class. But beware, backpacks can cause your child back pain. And according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, that condition is becoming more common. The CPSC says backpack injuries in children ages 5 to 18 increased more than 6 percent between 2010 and 2011. A doctor at Children's Health Care of Atlanta says parents can take some steps to minimize risk. Backpacks should weigh less than 15 percent of the child's body weight, stay away from packs with narrow straps that can dig into muscles or buy a rolling book bag instead.
