Health Alert 9-13-12

September 13, 2012 - There are new worries for tourists worldwide. Health officials have sent warnings to Yosemite National Park visitors, from 39 other countries, about a potentially deadly hantavirus uncovered at some of the park's cabins this summer. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says up to 10 thousand people are at risk. So far, the deadly lung disease has infected six people that we know of, two of those people have died. The CDC says fever and fatigue, a history of potential rural rodent exposure, together with shortness of breath could be indicative of the hantavirus.

Also, a new study says men who sleep in the same room as their children have lower testosterone levels. Researchers at Notre Dame found when new fathers slept near their kids, their testosterone levels dropped. 362 fathers in the Philippines to determine whether their sleeping arrangements, either sleeping on the same surface as their children, in the same room, or separately, were related to their testosterone levels. Previous research has shown men with less testosterone are more involved with their children's upbringing. The full report is published in the journal PLoS ONE.
