Health Alert 5-2-12

May 2, 2012 - Researchers believe millions of lives could be saved if more countries adopted anti-smoking policies. 174 nations have increased cigarette prices and implemented ad campaigns encouraging smokers to quit. Doctors at the University of Michigan say if all countries did the same, the number of smokers worldwide could eventually be cut by about a third. Without the World Health Organization voluntary tobacco control policy, and with the same starting and quitting rates, smoking prevalence is estimated at about 23 percent by the year 2020. The study shows that doubling the price of cigarettes will have the biggest impact on tobacco use.

Also, lifting heavy weight might not be the only way to build big muscles. Researchers from McMaster University found lighter weight combined with a higher number of repetitions can be just as effective. They say the secret is not the size of the weight you lift, but stimulating the muscles until they become fatigued. Data also shows practical significance for gym enthusiasts but also for people with compromised skeletal muscle mass, such as the elderly, patients with cancer, or those who are recovering from trauma, surgery, or even stroke.
