Health Alert 6-21-12

June 21, 2012 - Statin drugs that reduce cholesterol have been shown to significantly increase fatigue, particularly in women. A study of 1,000 people at the University of California San Diego found statin users had less energy and got tired from exertion. While statins are among the most widely prescribed drugs on the market, the study suggests doctors should weigh the risks for some patients, including women, those without heart disease, and people over 70, even if they do have heart disease.

Also, a new study suggests a link between dental plaque and premature cancer death. Researchers in Sweden tracked 1,400 people over 24 years, and found dental plaque was associated with a 79 percent increase in dying early from cancer. The risk was much higher for men. The authors caution the absolute risk of death is low, and their findings don't prove that dental plaque causes or definitely contributes to cancer.
