Health Alert 6-27-12

June 27, 2012 - Some people who get weight loss surgery may end up with a higher tendency to abuse alcohol. Researchers looked at the drinking habits of more than 2,400 obese adults before and after weight-loss procedures. They found the number of patients with an alcohol problem jumped more than 50 percent within two years. The study is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Also, a new study finds loneliness can be a health risk. Researchers in San Francisco asked more than a thousand seniors if they felt left out or isolated. Nearly half responded that they felt lonely. The study found six years later, those who were lonely were at an increased risk of death. They were also more likely to have trouble performing daily activities such as climbing stairs.
