Health Alert 6-29-12

June 29, 2012 - Antibiotic-free meat, that's what's for dinner, or at least that's what's on America's shopping list. That's according to a new study by the Consumers Union, the group that publishes Consumer Reports magazine. In the group's research, 86 percent of consumers said they wanted meat raised without antibiotics in their local supermarket and 60 percent said they'd pay more for it. The same group used secret shoppers to check out meat counters at stores in 23 states and found some chains offer no drug-free choices. Farmers started using antibiotics in livestock back in the 1950's because they found the animals grew bigger, faster with less feed. Public health officials say the drugs may be contributing to the rise in antibiotic resistant infections in humans.

Also, traffic noise is more than just annoying, it can be bad for your health. Research suggests it can actually give you a heart attack. 50,000 people joined a Danish cancer society study. It found a 12 percent higher risk of heart attack with every ten decibels of noise. Researchers say traffic noise increases stress, and can prevent sleep, and that may explain the increased cardiac risk.
