When Ashley Jarvis found out she had diabetes, not even her dog Tequila could calm her down.
"I was really scared because I had to give myself shots," said Ashley Jarvis.
Her family was full of questions. How much do you know?
One out of three people with diabetes experience complications. what are they at risk for? Blindness, heart attack, stroke and gum disease.
While being overweight is a risk factor for Type 2, it doesn't matter where the calories come from. Type 1 is genetic.
"In fact the way the genetics work especially if the father has diabetes there is a much larger chance that one of his children will get diabetes," said Dr. Deidre McSweeney-Tyson/Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital, Pediatric Endocrinologist. "But the take home message is, a lot of type 2 diabetes can be prevented by changing one's lifestyle and not gaining weight."
