April 3, 2012 - Giving out free nicotine patches and counseling smokers may not help them kick the habit. A study in the British Medical Journal looked at nearly 2600 smokers who called a smoking help line. They found offering the smokers extra support to quit like free nicotine replacement therapy and proactive telephone counseling made no difference in quitting success rates.
Also, a new study suggests red meat makes you happy. Scientists at Deakin University in Australia found that women who ate less than the recommended amount of beef, were twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression or anxiety. Researchers took into account the patient's diet, weight, age, physical activity and socioeconomic status and the result remained the same. Scientists involved in the study say there was no relationship between other forms of protein, such as chicken or fish, and mental health.
