Medical Minute 4-2-12

April 4, 2012 - People who live alone may be at higher risk of depression. Researchers in Finland followed 3500 men and women for seven years. The risk of depression was almost 80 percent higher for people who lived alone, compared to people who lived in a social or family setting. One quarter of people living alone filled an anti-depressant prescription during the seven year study, compared to just 16% of those who lived with spouses, family, or roommates.

Also, researchers in Japan discovered that music can have an effect on organ transplants. They looked at heart tranplants in mice and found that opera and classical music influences the immune system reducing organ rejections. Other types of single monotone music did not have the same effect. Although the research was on mice, the positive effects of music on the immune systems of humans has already been established.
