New research finds heart disease patients who practice transcendental meditation experience are less likely to die.
Researchers from the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Maharish University in Iowa randomly assigned about 200 African Americans to either meditate or make lifestyle changes.
After 9 years the meditation group saw a 47% reduction in deaths, heart attacks and strokes.
The meditation group also saw a drop in blood pressure and psychological stress in some participants.
But the lifestyle change group saw little difference, many of them did not change.
Doctors say research should be expanded and include other ethnic groups to further see how transcendental meditation affects heart patients.
They presented the findings at the American Heart Association's meeting.

Numerous independent researchers have shown that not only are the TM researcher's claims unsound, they are often biased, utilize poor controls and either hide funding sources or openly use funding sources from TM advocates. The most consistent thing about these TM researchers is their desire to deceive, to sell their product(s) and how poor their methods of research have remained for many, many years. Usually sincere scientific research improves from initial pilot studies, through more refined inquiry. Unlike these sincere inquirers, TM research remains poor. Because of the lack of journalistic rigor, they continue to not only prey on funding sources like the NIH, they are also desperately
