In today's Health Matters, women who are both overweight and smoke during pregnancy could end up damaging their baby's developing heart.

Dutch researchers looked at nearly eight hundred fetuses and babies with congenital heart defects, but no other birth defects.

They compared them with three hundred fetuses and babies born with chromosomal abnormalities, but no heart defects.

Results showed women who were both overweight and smoked during pregnancy were two and a half times more likely to have a baby with a congenital heart defect.

The team also discovered babies born to overweight moms who smoked during pregnancy had a three-fold increased risk of blood flow reduction from the heart.

Findings appear in the journal "Heart."
