In today's Health Matters, a just-released video is giving us a look at diabetes like never before. The real-time video is the first ever showing the progression of diabetes on a cellular level.
Using mouse models, researchers at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology have created live movies showing the destruction of the insulin-producing beta cells by the immune system T-cells, a process that leads to type 1 diabetes.
This unprecedented view shows how diabetes develops in the pancreas.
Now that scientists can see the process in which beta cells are destroyed, it's hoped that researchers will be able to devise new drugs and treatments for people who live with diabetes.
