Cairo, GA - Her picture adorns the gym's wall. Her accolades are enshrined a glass case. But Teresa Edwards has never been bestowed an honor quite like this one. Her alma mater, Cairo High School, has named their basketball court after her.

"Its been a long time coming," Cairo Athletic Director Todd Jones said. "Teresa Edwards is a phenomenal basketball player. She has represented Cairo High School well through the years."

"It's a big honor. It's a big thing that I'm representing here," said Edwards, who currently switches residences in Atlanta, GA and Manhattan, NY. "Now I've gotta carry the torch for a group of people in Cairo and we continue to do great things here."

Edwards is considered one of the most decorated female athletes in the world. She's a five-time Olympian (four gold medals), a two-time All-American at the University of Georgia, the state's high school player of the year and a state champion.

She was 58-3 in her final two years at Cairo and 116-17 in her entire career at UGA. She's also the current career leader in assists for the Bulldogs and scored just under 2,000 career points at a time when the three point line didn't exist.

"Let me tell you, I never aspired to be a five-time Olympian," she said. "I aspired to be the best basketball player I can be and because of that I ended up being a five-time Olympian."

That may have never happened, though. When Edwards was in middle school, she asked her mother if she could tryout for the girls basketball team. Her mother didn't think she stood a chance, so her mother told her no. But Edwards went ahead and tried out for the team anyway and she made it. So, now, she wants other kids to grow up with the same fearlessness, too.

"Maybe, maybe somebody, one kid left the building today wanting to defy the boundaries of Cairo, Georgia to see what the world holds for them with their gift," Edwards said.

And maybe that somebody, like Edwards, will have their name forever linked to a basketball court.
