Tallahassee, FL - When B.J. Fletcher was a Godby student a little more than 10 years ago, he was adamant at trying everything the school offered.
"I played everything except girls softball and volleyball," he said.
He was one of the best athletes in the area and remains the only Tallahassee wrestler to win a state title.
And that's something that bothers him as he reminisces one Sunday afternoon.
"Don't get me wrong, I liked being the first, but I don't like being the only one anymore," Fletcher said. "I played every sport and nothing compares to winning a championship individually, by yourself and knowing that everything you put into it comes out right there at that moment. It makes it all worth it. It's a beautiful feeling."
However, the sport he pursued in college was football. He won a conference championship during his freshman year at Tennessee State.
"When I went to Nashville, I got into MMA, started competing, started training," Fletcher said. "Had a chance to win some nice medals and trophies and things. It opened up some doors for me and when I came back here to Tallahassee I got involved."
Fletcher is now the head wrestling coach at Rickards High School after spending the past few years as an assistant at his alma mater, Godby.
"By me being here, hopefully that if I do my job appropriately, wrestling can be better in Tallahassee and this school can develop a program that has a reputation in this state," he said.
Of course, if there's anyone who knows about having a good wrestling reputation, it would be Fletcher.
Rickards will host its first wrestling meet on Wednesday against Godby starting at 5:30pm.
