Crawfordville, FL -- Wakulla is one win away from playing for a state championship.
"To us, as a War Eagle family, this is our best summer that we've had."
That was head coach Scott Klees during a seven on seven passing camp in mid July. Now the War Eagles are one of four teams left in class 5-A.
"We pulled back from when we started at FCA camp at the beginning of the year. We pulled from that and we started than, a long time ago, that we wanted to win a state championship.
"A lot of people told us that we weren't going to come this far. Like coach has been preaching, prove them wrong."
Which they've done so but are not taking any win for granted. Wakulla began the year (2-2). Since then they have won the district and have not lost since late September.
Klees adds, "Early in the year we lost two game back to back, and we were looking ahead. We started off the year pretty good and then lost those two games back to back. We learned our lesson, you can't look ahead. Anyone can beat you.
The state semifinals is the deepest the War Eagles have flown into the playoffs since 1981, the last time they won a state title. Every week added on to their schedule is a learning experience for the players and the coaches.
Hutchinson adds, "It's unbelievable. Thirty years, that's a long time, I wasn't even born. As everyone has told us, we came a long way and we have to be the team to do it."
Klees adds, "This is uncharted territory for me. The last time Wakulla had done this was 30 years ago when coach Jones was the head coach and won a state championship. It's a new experience but a great one."
They hope it lives on one more week.
