This morning, the Good Morning Show was joined by Orlando Espinosa. Mr. Espinosa has been part of the Latino-focused higher education outreach initiatives since Salle Mae's initial research announcement, and he has been a Paying for College workshop presenter since October 2003.
For many years, he had been a leadership advisor to individuals and groups on education and has conducted workshops on college admissions and cultural sensitivity.
On the Road: The Paying for College Tour is a partnership with local financial aid professionals from area colleges, student-serving organizations and Latino community-based organizations. The 45 workshops and 80 community events are designed to bring financial aid information to Latino families.
The tour is a response to the critical lack of financial aid awareness among Latinos, hampering their college attendance. This was revealed by the largest-ever survey of Latino perspectives on financial aid, commissioned by The Sallie Mae Fund in March 2004. Latinos represent the largest and most rapidly growing minority group in the U.S., yet their enrollment and graduation rates are significantly lower than their Caucasian and African-American counterparts.
Research has shown a direct correlation between awareness of financial aid and college attendance, and that Latino families prefer to learn about financial aid from in-person meetings or workshops.
