It is election eve in Florida, in a campaign season that's full of mud slinging and hotly contested races.
Early voting is over and polls will open bright and early Tuesday morning in a primary that could boast a record turnout.
John Word has been working the polls in Leon County since 1998, and as the clerk for precinct 5111, he's just as excited and prepared for Tuesday's primary election as ever before.
Word said, "I enjoy working at the polls. I open the cage that has all the supplies in it. My people know in advance what they're supposed to pull out of the cage. We're ready to go."
On the day before the 2010 primary, all 110 clerks had to come to the elections warehouse to pick up their portfolios.
Elections officials go over instructions with the clerks and make sure they have their paperwork, supplies, and everything they need to oversee the some 1,100 poll workers at the 103 precincts.
Precinct clerk Judith Sheperd said, "I'm excited. I've been doing this for several years and I always get really excited."
The workers say they expect to be just as busy Tuesday as they were during the early voting period.
The supervisor of elections, Ion Sancho, says early voting finished with a record 132 percent increase over the 2008 primary election: 9,891 voted v. 4,256 two years ago.
Barbara Mathis is also a clerk at one of the precincts. She said, "It makes me feel very good because it shows that people in our county really are concerned about the whole overall situation that the country is in and they want to make a change for the better."
Sancho says it's not that more people are voting, it's just more got out early. He says when there are a lot of races that are too close to call, that's the perfect environment for a good turnout.
The supervisor of elections says the turnout from the 2008 primary was 31 percent. He says he expects Tuesday's turnout to be better.
Sancho advises voters to come to the polls ready with their Florida driver's license or photo I.D. card.
He says workers no longer have to check voter's registration cards.
