Domestic Dispute Turns Deadly in Tallahassee Home

John Bailey claims it was self defense, but deputies say his story just doesn't add up. Neighbors on Buckfield Drive still can't believe what happened Sunday night and that the man who always waved from his front yard is now accused of something so terrible.

Angela Hatcher, a neighbor, said, “I always saw, you know, the dad was always outside playing with the kids and was always real friendly if you passed by."

Twenty-eight-year-old John Bailey is accused of strangling his estranged wife Kelly and then hiding her body in a closet.

Arrest papers indicate the two may have been arguing over custody of their children when things turned violent. Bailey called 9-1-1 himself. He claims his wife threatened to kill him with a butcher knife and he fought back, but deputies say his story doesn't add up

Bailey wasn't injured and he waited nearly an hour to call for help.

SGT Curtis Parker said, “He waited 45 minutes to an hour prior to contacting law enforcement. The victim's body was concealed. It just doesn't seem right to us at this time."

It's not clear where the couple's infant and toddler were when their parents were fighting. In his statement to investigators, Bailey claims he shut the bathroom door so the boys would not see their mother on the floor.

Deputies have charged Bailey with an open count of murder while they continue to investigate. At last word, DCF was trying to locate a family member or friend to care for the Bailey's two young sons.
