[UPDATE] (12:20PM) -- Miami, Florida (AP) --

The FBI says the man who was detained overnight, September 2 -3, at Miami's airport has been "very cooperative," and isn't under arrest.

He's identified as a 70-year-old scientist -- an American
citizen -- who was detained after screeners spotted a metal
canister in his luggage. No explosives have been found. An FBI
agent says the item has been taken to a lab for more testing.

The agent says the man was on a flight that flew into Miami.

A police bomb squad spent hours scouring the airport and
passengers had to be evacuated from four of the airport's six
concourses last night. Airport roadways were closed down.

Washington (AP) --

A government official says a scientist has
been detained in Miami after screeners found a metal canister in
his luggage that looked like a pipe bomb.

The official says the FBI and Miami Dade police are interviewing
the 70-year-old man. No explosives have been found. The official
spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing
investigation.

Four of Miami International Airport's six concourses along with
an onsite hotel were evacuated on the evening of September 2. A bomb squad spent
hours scouring the airport and passengers were evacuated from the
complex that evening and airport roadways were closed down.
Police and airport officials described the shutdown of the four
concourses as a safety precaution.

The airport fully reopened just after 4 a.m.
