Miami, FL (AP) - A federal appellate court has upheld a Florida law
that prohibits funding for academic and research travel to nations
that are considered "sponsors of terrorism."
The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta ruled Tuesday that
the state law does not conflict with federal control over foreign
policy.
Professors at several state universities filed a lawsuit against
the state in 2008. A federal judge in Miami ruled that the law was
unconstitutional.
State Rep. David Rivera, R-Miami, who supported the 2006
legislation, said the appellate court's decision was a victory for
Florida taxpayers who do not want their money going to countries
like Cuba.
University of Florida professor Carmen Diana Deere, a plaintiff
in the original suit, said the law is a barrier to all levels of
research.

Hey, ANYONE can go ANYWHERE they choose.....they just have TO SPEND THEIR OWN MONEY instead of using monies that originates with the taxpayers! It may be called "federal funding" but Federal funds are accumulated from the hard working American citizens. The USA is NOT a terrorist country; at least NOT until Terrorists started INFILTRATING across the boarders & making car bombs & getting on planes with bombs in their britches!!!! At least Pres. Bush DEFENDED our country whereas OBAMA is GIVING IT AWAY!!!!

The US is a terrorist state - or was under Bush (Gitmo, Abu Ghraib, etc.). Does this mean Florida researchers can't do research in this country???

The sanctions against Cuba do not hinder international commerce with Cuba. We are the only nation that prohibits tourism. That is more of a restriction on my liberty to go where, and do what I wish than a punitive action against the Cuban government. Want to cure a communist? Feed him a diet of American commerce....works every time.
