Big Cypress National Preserve, FL (AP) - Wildlife officials
are calling off this fall and winter deer hunting season on 100,000
acres in the Big Cypress National Preserve due to a dramatic
decline in the size of the deer herd.
The National Park Service has been keeping a watchful eye on the
decline in the preserve's southernmost region. The area is known as
the Stairsteps Unit for its jagged shared boundary with Everglades
National Park south of U.S. 41.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is
responding by calling off the hunting seasons for certain parts of
the park. Deer season is open, though, to other parts of the
729,000-acre preserve.
A task force will try to find out the reason for the decline.
Theories include high water levels, disease and predators with an
upper hand.

It is time that Florida go to a tag system like Texas. I know it would not be popular for several years but the dividends would definitely add up over time. That way more does could be harvested and help balance the buck-to-doe ratio, which is totally out of whack! Of course this would require hunters giving up their focus on NUMBERS and focus more on QUALITY.

F.W.C. Needs to take alook at their deer pretty soon. The forket horn rule is killing off to many young deer.Id like to see you guys get more into managing deer in Florida and go to a 4 point rule within the next year or so.And stop the BROWN ITS DOWN RULE FOR BOW HUNTERS.At 30 to 40 yards out if it has nubbs dont shoot it. MORE MANAGEMENT MORE BIG BUCKS
