A normal lunch period at Cairo High School turned downright scary yesterday when a student pulled out two large kitchen knives and threatened classmates.

The student had allegedly been in an off-campus fight with some classmates over the weekend - and yesterday she was looking to get even.

School officials stepped in to stop the student before she could start swinging.

"Fortunately, we had a large number of faculty members on duty that were right there at the incident when it happened and immediately confiscated the knives from the young lady," said Cairo High Principal David McCurry.

Students say that although they are happy with how quickly school faculty members responded to the situation, more could have been done to prevent it in the first place.

Senior Estrellita Valle told us, "Sometimes they can prevent things from happening...they shoulda...they should put metal detectors or something. I mean, they lock the fence and everything, I mean, they need to do a little more."

School officials say this is an isolated incident and that students and parents should feel safe at Cairo High.

Principal McCurry stressed his desire for students to feel comfortable coming to school.

The student with the knives was arrested and charged with possession of a weapon on campus and inciting to riot.

Two other students were charged with disrupting a public school.

The three students remain suspended indefinitely from Cairo High until school officials rule on disciplinary actions.

Hey, Local Teacher from Thomasville: YOUR particular comment doesn't mean a whole lot. You "EDUCATORS" in Thomasville have quite a few "on-campus" incidents yourselves, so mind your biz!!!!

Local Teacher: You can disagree all you want, but IF the proper disciplinary authority HAD NOT been taken away THIS INCIDENT WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED and so many other incidents like it!!! There are so many teachers & other staff ON THE GROUNDS because there are so many incidences of fights, weapons being brought on campus, drugs, AND gang activity. Cairo High School is a small school, but it is far from being the safest. I know. My child attended & graduated from there so I know the things that go on there. CHS, like other surrounding schools, IS NOT IMMUNE to the level of INCREASED violence that is occurring in ALL schools. I commend Principal McCurry, Asst. Principle Todd Jones & the others for "walking the school yards" as they do, BUT, you have to admit that it is sad that they have to do this. Sadly, there will be a time when they might NOT get there in time.

I think school officials and teachers are to be commended for their response to the situation. This is a case where teachers and administrators being on duty really paid off. I disagree with the previous poster who commented that authority has been removed from the hands of administration. In this case, it appears that the principal and his staff had the situation under control.
