Early Voting Begins

As daylight arrived, the bleary eyed at makeshift camp Kerry on the Leon County Courthouse lawn came to life.

Leandra Padgett from Tampa was especially interested in voting early. She was turned away from the polls in 2000.

Leandra says, "I really felt bad. I didn’t really trust the government, I didn’t trust doctors for a while."

Kristin Hemmingway, a FAMU student, says, "I need to know that I did everything that I could to make sure that my voice was heard."

A life-sized cutout of George Bush was also in line courtesy of the College Young Republicans.

David Powers says, "We’ve been camping out all night. We got here at 8:00 last night, we are excited about voting so we wanted to be one of the first in line."

As the doors opened, the line was more than 50 deep. Most elections supervisors have never seen such interest. Monday also begins something else; the presence of lawyers here watching for mistakes.

Ron Meyer, a Kerry attorney, says, "We think having a lawyer here will help rather than hinder people casting their vote."

The advent of early voting begins what will likely be 15 tumultuous days leading to the election.
