Local High Schooler Headed to Washington

Kashonna Smith will soon trade her English honors classroom for the courtroom. She's one of 350 students chosen from the across the United States to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum.

Since the age of seven, Kashonna has dreamed of taking on the Perry Mason role and attending Florida State University.

Kashonna says, "I thought it would be fascinating to find something none of my people have done before."

While in our nation's capital, this Rickards High School junior will work along side actual attorneys and exercise the skills used by the Supreme Court justices. Being chosen is a feat her Rickards family is proud of.

Dr. Pink Hightower, principal of Rickards High School, says, "We are elated, does say what we already know, does say we have an outstanding faculty, staff and students at Rickards. Achievement is unlimited when you apply yourself."

Kashonna hopes her time in DC will give her a leg up on life after high school. Kashonna leaves next Tuesday for a six-day stint in Washington, DC.
