A new nationwide campaign is addressing the special needs of the elderly population. The goal of the campaign is to make sure the elderly are in good hands in the event of a disaster.
One of the many responsibilities for the administrator of Woodmont Assisted Living Facility is knowing what to do if there's any type of emergency.
"When you have residents who have confusion, Alzheimer’s, dementia, you have to plan for them because they won't know how to make decisions for themselves.
Residents are aware of Woodmont’s disaster plan, and it makes Buford Tyre feel at ease.
"If I didn't feel like I was safe, I wouldn't he here."
But for those who aren't fortunate enough to be under constant care like those here at Woodmont, a new campaign is encouraging family members to step in case an emergency happens."
The "In Touch" campaign was launched to make sure families map out a plan. Some of the areas "In Touch" covers include:
- Identifying potential emergency situations that could occur in the home.
- Talking about concerns for you and your older loved one.
- Outlining a plan in writing.
- Knowing what resources are available that might assist you in your plan.
It is recommended that you take the time out now during the holiday season because you don't know what lies ahead in the New Year.
"It's just good to know so in the event that something does happen you're not scrambling trying to figure out what to do."
And that could mean a world of difference in a time of crisis.
