Ready to Attax

It all started with a knock on the door.

The victim's wife says, "Two men approached on the side door, which is kind of unusual because most people come to the front. They knocked. He couldn't get there quickly enough, so they then came to the front door and he did have the screen door locked so that's as far as they got."

The two men claimed to be Lowndes County tax assessors needing to come inside to assess the property.

"My husband said that's fine, but I want to see some ID, which they said they didn't have any."

Afterwards, they fled the scene in an unmarked white car. The victim and his wife called the Board of Assessors to discover the two men had been frauds.

Paige Dukes, Lowndes County spokesperson, says, "This is not our procedure. If someone knocks on your door and there's no identification and an unmarked car, please call 9-1-1 immediately."

County officials say residents should always ask to see ID, and be very cautious of anyone asking to come into your home.

CAPT J.D. Yeager of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office says, "We do have the interstate, so we do have the potential of people coming in here. It's real easy to come in here try and settle down and make you a living illegally, so we have to watch that on a constant basis too."
