Decatur County, Georgia is growing by leaps and bounds. Sunday they dedicated a brand new school and there are more openings planned next month.
West Bainbridge Elementary is the first school built in Decatur County in 40 years. For administrators and parents it is a proud moment. Hundreds gathered for the open house to dedicate the school and plan for the future.
"We've outgrown that space. We now have currently around 525 children, whereas the old school was probably designed to hold around 235 children, so we were in much need of a new facility," said West Bainbridge Principal Linda Lumpkin.
Just look at all the construction and you'll see that Bainbridge is growing. It plans to add about 700 new jobs by the end of next year. Those jobs are coming in just for the new Super Wal-Mart and the brand new Home Depot.
"In those stores, not including all the other planned growth that is going to be over there," said Chamber of Commerce President Cile Warr. "So, at some point it will be over 1,000 people just in that area," added Warr.
City officials expect the jobs will bring more families to the area, which will start filling up their brand new school fast.
The new school is built to house 750 students. It's been open for use since October.
