Florida County Reports Low Unemployment

The job numbers are out and a Florida county tops the list.

The Florida Agency for Workforce Innovation has released unemployment rankings showing Lafayette County with the lowest unemployment rating during November.

The Civilian Labor Force in Lafayette County is a little less than 3,000, with only 53 people listed as unemployed, giving the county an unemployment rate of only 1.8 percent.

Karen Barnhill, a Mayo resident, says, "I would think that the unemployment rate here was higher due to the fact that we don't have a lot of job opportunities here. The main source of employment here is the prison, the school, and mainly farm owners is what's here."

The few who are unemployed in Lafayette County have to drive at least 25 miles to Taylor County to receive any type of employment assistance.

Barbara Bratcher of the Taylor County Workforce Connection says, "An individual was there in Lafayette County. We found that the remote areas were not producing enough customers to continue on full-time, so what we ended up doing was closing our remote offices."

Rounding out the top 10 counties with the least amount of unemployment: Liberty, Alachua, Monroe, Franklin, Wakulla, Leon, Okaloosa, Union and Walton Counties.

The Florida Agency for Work Force Innovation adds that many of the counties impacted by the 2004 hurricanes were among those with the largest unemployment rate increases.
