The "Florida Office of Minority Health" hosted an infant mortality summit.

Numerous community members came out to the Florida A&M University Pharmacy Building where the event was held.

"Out of 1000 births, 12.9 babies die in a year. Well, that means there are 13 children who have not made it before the first year of birth and that number just struck me. That's 13 little souls that are gone," says Tonya Lewis Lee, the Spokesperson for "A Healthy Baby Begins with You" Campaign.

Lee says the first steps are understanding the problem, sharing information and learning how to prevent it.

The summit also offered H-I-V testing, pregnancy tests, dental assessments and screenings for sickle cell and blood pressure.
