Leon County Students Tops in Regional FCAT Scores

They're crunching numbers to check student gains and areas in need of improvement.

Recently released FCAT figures show students in Leon County are making the grade.

Even though Leon County is making successful strides, Gov. Bush says middle and high school levels aren't where they need to be to compete on a global level.

So how does Leon County stack up statewide?

Superintendent Bill Montford says, "Our tenth graders are third in the state in math and first in the state in reading."

Of districts its size or larger, Leon County students finished in the top three in the state in third grade reading and math. The Leon County average was usually eight points above the state average.

Education Commissioner John Winn says teachers are going beyond books to boost learning gains, and officials only hope that appetite grows.
