Superintendent Bill Montford says, "Our tenth graders are third in the state in math and first in the state in reading."
Of districts its size or larger, Leon County students finished in the top three in the state in third grade reading and math. The Leon County average was usually eight points above the state average.
Education Commissioner John Winn says teachers are going beyond books to boost learning gains, and officials only hope that appetite grows.
