A fire this Memorial Day sends one man to the hospital and kills his two dogs. Firefighters were working into the night trying to identify the cause.

The Thomasville Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1611 Clay Street that sent smoke billowing into the air just after 6 p.m. Monday evening.

According to the Thomasville Fire Department, the home's occupant escaped with a few burns, but his two dogs perished in the blaze.

Thomasville Fire Department Battalion Chief Bobby Hart says, "We was called into a fully involved structure. Response time was three minutes. We basically had it all out in twenty-four minutes and working on hot spots now at this time. It's gonna be further investigated this evening."

Hart says he believes the fire started in the front of the house, but the cause is unknown. The investigation is ongoing.
