100th Birthday

Turning 100 years old is a milestone most of usually don't make, but one man in Havana, Florida accomplishes that feat this week, just as his family also honors him as their father figure.

Gus Jackson hits the big 100 this Thursday, June 23, but his church has begun celebrating his long life this weekend.

Clinton Gurley, an Old Jerusalem M.B. Church member, said, "Father, we come to honor Deacon Gus Father. Lord, we thank you Father for him for 100 years, Father."

In addition to his birthday, Jackson's family is also honoring his years of being a father figure to generations of his family.

Yolanda Lockett, Jackson's great great niece, added, "In fact, we have with my uncle, my grandmother, my mother, myself, my daughter and my granddaughter, there's six generations that he's been a part of."

When Jackson talks about his life, he talks mostly about his two late wives. He met his first wife in elementary school.

"Me and her married in 1926, 20th of May, same year the storm came over my house on a Wednesday night. Thursday night at 8 o'clock me and her got married. She was 19, I was 21," shared Jackson.

He married his second wife after his first wife passed away. Jackson has been a Havana farmer all of his life.

Avis Lockett, his great great niece, said, "He still gets up at 4 o'clock in the morning. He's had his breakfast by 5 a.m. and he goes out and gets in the fresh air for about two or three hours. "

And his great great nieces say they expect Jackson to keep living and inspiring those around for many more years to come.

Gus Jackson’s family also says they think his personality and positive attitude helps keep him healthy.
