At nearly 57 years old, Helena Barrington considers herself a "sickle cell survivor." Now she's encouraging everyone to attend a health fair on the painful and deadly disease.
The local singer says people need to know more about it.
Helena Barrington says, “So more people are still not aware of sickle cell disease. They have no idea of what it is and how it functions and it's hard to explain to anyone the pain that goes with it.”
Sickle cell researcher and Harvard professor Kenneth Bridges will be the guest speaker.
The health fair is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Love and Faith Ministries right behind Tallahassee Memorial.
