Anti-Tobacco Group Nears Amendment for 2006 Ballot

“Floridians for Youth Tobacco Education Now” expects to have the required number of certified petition signatures within the next few days. It has about 250,000 so far.

If approved, the amendment would force the state to spend more of its tobacco settlement money on smoking prevention programs, which have gone from $70 million in 1998 to just $1 million.

Florida collects almost $360 million a year from the tobacco industry because of a legal settlement. This amendment would force the state to spend 15 percent of that money on youth smoking prevention programs.
