The holidays may be weeks away, but many charities have already begun asking for donations.
J.R. Kelly with Florida's Division of Consumer Services says people should do their homework before writing a check. He says it may surprise you, but there is no law requiring a charity to spend a certain percentage of its money on the actual cause.
Kelly says, "For example, if they want to spend 90 percent on boats, houses, salaries and only 10 percent on charitable purpose for what they were formed, there's nothing wrong with that."
Kelly says the best thing to do is call 1-800-HELP- FLA or visit www.800helpfla.com.
