The legislators are proposing a bill to help facilities upgrade their emergency generators so they could even run their air conditioning.
The money would go to facilities that aren’t in evacuation zones but open their doors to residents of those that are.
Sen. Skip Campbell, (D) Tamarac, FL, says, “It will provide for about 466 facilities to upgrade their facilities so they can take the overflow, the people who are being evacuated. This will cost the state approximately 40 million dollars. This is not a great expense when you talk about one person’s life.”
Democratic Sen. Gwen Margolis of Miami is sponsoring the bill.
Florida is home to more than 80,000 nursing home residents.
