GPS Company Backs Out of State Contract

The Houston company, Satellite Tracking Of People, or “STOP,” had been selected to provide GPS tracking devices for sex offenders in north Florida. But the firm withdrew its bid after the state began testing its ankle bracelets.

Department of Corrections officials say the change won’t put the state behind in enforcing the law.

The satellite tracking is a requirement of the Jessica Lunsford Act, which is named for the nine-year-old Homosassa girl who was abducted and killed in February.

The act includes an almost $4 million project to track up to 1,200 sex offenders in Florida.
