It destroyed the largest sugar refinery in the U.S. and a local company is really feeling the effects.
Flowers Foods in Thomasville produces more than 1.9 million pounds of baked goods every week, and the company depends on sugar.
A spokesperson for Flowers says the company is finding alternatives to keep production rolling.
Mary Krier explains, "Working closely with our suppliers and at a higher cost, Flowers has been able to pull together an emergency supply of sugar that should cover us for the short term."
The baking industry and Flowers are asking the USDA to allow more sugar to come in from other countries to replace the sugar that's been lost.
