Neighbors living around Blue Bay Lane say they heard gun shots fire off a little bit before 9 o'clock Saturday morning, and soon after that the Tallahassee police arrived to investigate.
SGT J. B. Johnson of the Tallahassee Police Department says, "Upon arrival of initial officers, indications that two subjects were down. Subsequently, it was determined that they were deceased. We're still in the very early stages of trying to determine what happened."
Police officers say they found the bodies of 20-year-old John Meikenhous III and 19-year-old Elizabeth Gilbert in the backyard of 1508 Blue Bay Lane where the couple lived with two other adults and a teenager.
As officers processed the scene, neighbors also tried to figure out what happened to the young couple.
Neighbor Timmy Henderson says he believes, "They were having an argument and I know that there's some drug activity. From what I hear the girl chose to shoot herself and then the guy who loved her picked it up and did it himself."
Another neighbor, Michael Forman, says, "They fussed on and off from time to time, but it didn't really seem like anything serious."
Several neighbors had similar speculations about what happened to the couple, but police are still conducting the official investigation of the shooting deaths.
We talked to people in the area. They appeared to be a close neighborhood where everyone knew each other on a first name basis and were surprised by these deaths.
The police have not verified any of the neighbors' speculations about the couple shooting themselves. They're working on the investigation and speaking with potential witnesses, including the other people who lived with the deceased couple.
