Update Wednesday 5:30 pm:

A bobcat that attacked a Tallahassee woman this week has tested positive for rabies.
TAKE VO/TLH :00

The bobcat bit and scratched Elaine Grace as she was walking her dogs on a trail behind the Ashford Club Apartments.

An animal control spokesman says Grace -- plus seven others who responded to the incident -- will undergo a post exposure vaccination series.

A dog involved in the incident was up to date on it's rabies shots and will be monitored over the next 45 days.

57-year-old Elaine Grace says she walks her dogs on a trail behind the Ashford Club Apartments every day -- but this time her walk was anything but relaxing.

Just as Grace's Jack Russell Terrier noticed a bobcat in the bushes, the bobcat attacked.

"As soon as it let go of my dog, it attacked me, just leaped on me," said Grace.

After it latched on to her shoulder and chest, Grace instinctively grabbed the bobcat by the neck and pinned it to the ground.

"I just grabbed it around the throat and held it down and screamed and screamed and screamed," she said.

Two people nearby heard the fight and heard those screams.

"It sounded like dogs were fighting and so I ran down there and I just helped her hold it down and someone else heard her screaming and came and helped hold it down also," said Chad Benson.

Neighbors say they had seen the big cat around the residential area all day and say they're glad no one was hurt too badly.

Grace received several deep scratches and puncture wounds to the shoulder and chest, but is in good condition.

The bobcat however, will be euthanized and checked for rabies.

A Leon County Animal Control spokesman says in his seven years of service he has never before seen a bobcat attack within Tallahassee city limits.

the American Indian population in animal form? Am I to understand that you would rather live alongside wild dangerous animals than in a safe city or suburb? Would you like to live in a country where you get hunted by jaguars while looking for food and water? would you like to take out the trash and see a pack of wolves staring at you? Would you like a child killed by a cougar? If the answer is yes you are probably living in the wrong place because most people cannot effectively coexist with many wild animals. Its just a fact. They become a nuisance to human communities. It is why I can see deer in my back yard and not mountain lions. If you disagree then be the first to totally renounce your way of life in order to give animals free run. And then stop mowing your lawn and weeding your garden too... And let criminals run loose. They are beautiful humans! Stop treating disease... it has a right to live!

Are you kidding me? What if you had a child that was attacked and was not strong enough to fight off the bobcat? Would you be crying for the cat then with your kid dead or dying and mauled? Bobcats are NOT endangered animals. They are classified as conservation status LC (least concern) there are about 1.5 million in the US alone... read up before you post! And whats so beautiful? It looks like a big version of the hundreds of cats put to sleep in shelters everyday because they are unwanted. Go save those animals if you want to complain and be righteous. Any potentially dangerous animal that attacks a human should be put down, even a pet dog, period. Even a black bear will run away from humans. But bobcats are nasty. If it attacked me or my family they wouldn't have had to worry about euthanizing it...

My son went to help the lady when he heard her screaming, thank God she or my son were not hurt too bad.. I understand not wanting to put the animal down, but if it were your son I think you would want to know if it had rabies. It was rabid , and now those who were injured must endure a series of painful shots. I am just glad this bobcat cannot harm anyone else.
