Hispanic Heritage Month

Mission San Luis proved a perfect backdrop Wednesday afternoon to help celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.

San Luis is the only reconstructed 17th century Spanish mission in the state of Florida, so what better place to learn about the first Spaniards to settle in Florida?

Partnering with Volunteer Florida, the mission welcomes children every Wednesday to learn about Florida’s Hispanic pioneers.

Scott Vandeman, who works for Volunteer Florida comments, "We hope of course that the children that attend will gain an appreciation for the importance of diversity and the importance of the Hispanic culture on the development of our state."

Florida's first lady Columba Bush joined the children as they toured the mission.

Hispanic Heritage Month ends October 15. There will be one more "Wednesdays at the Mission" before the month is over.
