TPD Wins Award for Mental Health Training

The Tallahassee Police Department receives an award for its attempts to improve officers' understanding of the mentally ill.

Training sessions like this are designed to help law enforcement officers when they encounter the mentally ill in the course of their jobs.

It teaches officers signs and symptoms of mental illness and teaches them where to send people for help.

SGT Chris Summers with TPD says, "We've taken a nationally recognized program, brought it here for our officers, and once again it's a benefit for our citizens because it's training our officers to deal with people in the middle of a mental health crisis."

The National Alliance on Mental Illness presented TPD with that Iris Award. Dozens of officers have already received the "Crisis Intervention Team" training.
