Holiday Heart Attacks

The shopping, ripping and running during the holidays may wear out more than your pocketbook. It can also put a strain on your heart.

Research shows that more heart attacks occur around the holidays than any other time of the year.

Doctors say this could be due to stress, high alcohol consumption, fatty foods and cigarettes.

Dr. Wayne Batchelor, a cardiologist, says, "Try to avoid smoking excessively, especially during the holidays. Exercise, diet, and keep your weight down."

Beverly Brake, a heart attack patient, says, "I didn't want to come because I knew Thanksgiving, there's a lot to do. Even after I got here I said I want to go home and make a pie. My son said no. I ended up staying here, and it's a good thing I did."

Dr. Batchelor says preventative measures also include getting your blood pressure checked regularly, and seeking immediate treatment for shortness of breath or chest discomfort.
