Candy Cane Cookies

For those of us with a sweet tooth, we can't wait for the holidays to roll around, because that's when we can really indulge our cravings for our favorites.

So today, we're taking an inside peek at this candy cane factory to see how they make one of our traditional favorites! Here at the world's largest candy cane factory, they're turning out thousands of candy canes, and it all starts on this assembly line, where batches of sugar and corn syrup are cooked up in big vats like this.

Then the mixture is cooled and sent to a pulling machine; that's how air is pulled into the candy until it's silky white. Then peppermint oil is added for flavor. And to give it its red pinstripe, a batch of a red candy mixture is entwined with the white mixture.

Okay, on down the line the candy goes to be spun, waxed, shaped, twisted, cut and wrapped. After that, they're dropped into the bender where they'll get their "gotta have" crooked shape! And whether we snack on 'em as is, or garnish with them or decorate with them, we know it's a holiday! And if we happen to break a few by accident, or maybe on purpose, we can bake up another treat: Candy Cane Cookies! We simply make a basic butter dough, shape it into 1-inch balls, roll them in crushed candy canes and sugar, bake 'em off, and mmm mmm, melt-in-our-mouth cookies with a festive, minty surprise!
